Barbara Colombo is the new Director of Mitchell Hamline’s Health Law Institute – News and Events

Barbara Colombo ’89, professor of law and director of the healthcare compliance program, is the new director of Mitchell Hamline’s nationally ranked Health Law Institute.

The institute is aimed at both JD students and health professionals looking for a better knowledge of health law in their career.

Colombo says the institute’s unique blend of teaching, which uses both classroom learning and experiential clinics and internships, will continue. “We are very intentional in the way we educate our students,” she noted. “Our students have the opportunity to work alongside industry leaders.

“Our goal will always be to prepare health law students to make an immediate and meaningful contribution after graduation. “

Colombo replaces Professor Thad Pope, who was director since January 2012. Pope received a Fulbright Fellowship and will be doing research at the University of Ottawa in the spring of 2021.

Colombo is a former nurse and aassistant vsCommissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health. After graduating with honors from William Mitchell College of Law in 1989, she joined the firm of Robins, Kaplan, Miller and Ciresi.

Also passionate about horses, Colombo servess on the Minnesota Racing Commission and owns with its partner Horse & Harley Farm, where they are outnumbered by six horses, four dogs, three cats, four chickens and countless deer.
