Conemaugh Health System will run a four-week training course for people wishing to pursue a career as a practical nurse from April 4. Weekday training includes two weeks of classroom training and two weeks of clinical training at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Throughout the month, students learn to participate in the direct day-to-day care of patients and families under the supervision of the Nurse Manager/RN and other members of the patient care team.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and pass standard clearances and a physical exam. The course is free and participants receive a weekly stipend ($350) for 100% attendance, passing grades, strong clinical skills, and a positive attitude. Upon successful completion of the program, students are guaranteed a full-time position as a nursing assistant within the healthcare system and are eligible for signing bonuses in place at the time of hire. Currently, the hiring bonus for full-time health care aides is $10,000 for a three-year contract.
