The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) recently established a new webpage related to telehealth. The purpose of the webpage is to summarize the OIG’s telehealth surveillance work to provide a summary of its findings and recommendations that can be used by policy makers and other stakeholders to assess potential changes to federal policies. of telehealth.
Telehealth usage over the previous two years has increased, and providers across the country have faced ever-changing requirements for telehealth billing and reimbursement, including temporary changes that expire with the end of the public health emergency. The COVID-19 pandemic has also led the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to reconsider their previous telehealth reimbursement policies. While the new OIG webpage does not provide resources for healthcare provider telehealth compliance, it does provide summaries of the OIG’s work plan, assessments and inspections, as well as results of OIG audits, each related to telehealth. These OIG reports can be a signal to providers as to where the OIG is targeting its enforcement actions and, therefore, where providers may wish to focus their telehealth compliance efforts. The health care provider community would be well served by regularly checking the new OIG web page.
