Ryan Heinonen named CEO of UP Health System


HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – UP Health System – Portage today announced that Ryan Heinonen has been named permanent chief executive officer (CEO).

He has served as the hospital’s interim CEO since October.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ryan to his new role as CEO of Portage,” said Gar Atchison, market president of UP Health System, of which Portage is a part. “Ryan is an excellent leader in healthcare. He has tremendous clinical expertise coupled with strong operational experience and dedication to this community. We believe he is the right leader to lead Portage into the future.

A native of Copper Country, Heinonen began his career at Portage as a registered nurse in 2010. He has held several leadership positions over the past ten years, the most recent of which was promoted to chief nursing officer ( CNO) in May 2019. During his tenure as CNO, Heinonen was responsible for the strategic growth and development of key service lines, quality and patient safety, investigation readiness and the compliance, UP Health System said in a press release.

Under Heinonen’s leadership, Portage has earned six consecutive Leapfrog A ratings, a five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), accreditation from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Chest Pain Center and several other awards and quality achievements, UP Health System said in a news release.

“In addition to his unique combination of operational and clinical experience, Ryan brings to Portage a true commitment to our hospital, our patients and our community,” said Dr. Timothy Labonte, Chairman of Portage’s Board of Directors. “We are excited to see what Portage will accomplish under Ryan’s leadership and partner with him to create the next chapter of our future. Heinonen earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing, master’s degree in nursing administration, and master’s degree in business administration from Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona.
